He can be extremely hit or miss, but my fervor I think is in large part due to the fact that he's an artist I've been able to watch develop over several years and it still astounds me how young he is (32) and I continue to look forward to his development. The recent tour with the Cardinals keeps getting better...

That's the same rap I've heard about his songwriting and studio work. It seems like he's overly prolific, but nobody has the clout to tell him when to shitcan a bad one. I've caught glimpses with Whiskeytown, then the Emmylou duet on Sessions and now with the several Cardinal DL's on the box. While I like the rawness of Whiskeytown, the stuff with the Cardinals is some superb ensemble playing.

This is a good solid band, and it would be my hope that he hangs with it for a while rather than continuing to be so Mercurial. I'm also hoping that he doesn't get "discovered."
